There are two things when it comes to stamps and collecting them.Collecting and philately.
philately means the study of stamps.
Collecting does mean you have to be a philatelist many collectors enjoy collecting stamps without knowing all about them.
but ofcourse in the end when you take collecting stamps seriously you need philatelic knowledge.
Collecting stamps began at the same time that stamps were first issued, and by 1860 allready thousands of people where collecting these tiny works of art.
At first it was called "timbromania" ("stamp madness"), Allthough it all began in Europe quickly it spread to the European colonies and americas.
Ofcourse there where many different ways of collecting one Woman from Paris had her walls papered with stamps!
More and more collectors appeared and, and the first stamp albums were sold around 1880's.Today these albums are collector items on their own!

Great Britain was the first country that issued a adhesive postage stamp for the delivery of mail on May 6, 1840. This first postage stamp, the "Penny Black", It was Sir Rowland Hill idea to prepay for mail with a postage stamp.by 1860 more than 70 countries were using postage stamps..
